An Improbable Meeting

It all started when our grandfather went on a spiritual quest to India in the 1970s. He didn't come back enlightened, but he did return with a century-old chutney recipe that he swore could get you there faster. His dream of sharing it with the world was cut short when he passed suddenly, and the recipe was lost seemingly forever.

Handwritten family recipe

Rediscovered in Hawai'i

That was until our Aunt Ohelo found the hand-written recipe and decided to recreate it in his honor and for the family in India that it originated from. Now reimagined in Hawai'i, each of our mango chutney varieties are made from a carefully chosen blend of aromatic spices imported from India and fresh local ingredients — a tradition we've carried for 20 years.

From Chutney to Collection

And just as the islands themselves came together over time, our collection grew too. What started with chutney became an artisanal line of island jams and jellies. Each one is inspired by the diverse cultures of Hawai'i and the fruit stands that lined the road to our home on the North Shore.

Matriarchs of Ohelo's

Ohelo's is rooted in 'ohana, grown from the 'aina, and made with aloha — a collection shaped by the women of our family, generation after generation. Our logo honors the three Alapa sisters of La'ie and our matriarch, Tūtū (grandmother), who has stood by Ohelo's side crafting these spreads with knowledge and a mother's love.

Passed Down, Carried Forward

Today, that same spirit lives on through our family's mo'opuna (grandchildren) as they build on what came before them by carrying our collection, culture and ancestors forward. Ohelo's is more than a line of spreads, it's our family's heart to aloha, and now it's yours.
